PE at Our School:
Why We Teach PE
At our school, we believe that physical education is essential for every child’s development. PE promotes physical health, emotional wellbeing, teamwork, and resilience. It helps children build confidence, develop motor skills, and understand the importance of leading an active lifestyle. We aim to instil a lifelong love of movement and sport, encouraging pupils to value physical activity as part of a balanced and healthy life.
How We Teach PE
Our PE curriculum is broad, inclusive, and progressive. It is designed to ensure that all children experience a wide range of physical activities and sports. We focus on six key areas:
- Fundamental movement skills – such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching.
- Team games – including football, netball, hockey, and rounders.
- Individual sports – such as athletics and gymnastics.
- Dance and creative movement – encouraging expression and coordination.
- Outdoor and adventurous activities – promoting problem-solving and collaboration.
- Health and fitness education – helping children understand how to care for their bodies.
Lessons are active, engaging, and differentiated to meet the needs of all learners. We encourage participation, effort, and enjoyment, while also developing skills and understanding. Children are given opportunities to lead, reflect, and evaluate their performance. We also offer enrichment activities such as sports clubs and competitions to raise the profile of PE across the school.
What We Hope Children Will Learn
By the end of their time at our school, we hope our pupils will:
- Be confident and competent in a range of physical activities.
- Understand the importance of physical activity for health and wellbeing.
- Work effectively as part of a team and show good sportsmanship.
- Set personal goals and persevere to achieve them.
- Enjoy being active and be motivated to continue participating in sport.
- Be prepared for the next stage of their education with a strong foundation in physical literacy.
We want our children to leave us with positive attitudes towards physical activity and the skills to lead healthy, active lives.
