Geography at our School

Why we teach Geography

At our school, we believe Geography is essential for helping children understand the world around them and their place within it. It encourages curiosity about different places, people, environments, and cultures, while developing an awareness of how the world is changing. Through Geography, pupils learn to ask questions, explore similarities and differences, and make sense of both the natural and human world. It helps children develop critical thinking, enquiry skills, and a sense of responsibility for the environment and the wider global community. Our aim is to inspire every child to become an informed, thoughtful, and curious citizen of the world.

How we teach Geography

Geography is taught progressively from Early Years through Key Stage 2, following the National Curriculum. Lessons include the study of local, national, and global places, as well as physical and human geography. Children explore topics such as weather, climate, landscapes, settlements, maps, and environmental change. We use a skills-based approach, revisiting key concepts and building knowledge and complexity over time. Pupils develop fieldwork and map-reading skills, including the use of atlases, globes, aerial photographs, and digital mapping tools. Cross-curricular links enrich learning—for example, using geography to support history, science, and environmental topics. We also encourage children to explore their local area and understand how it connects to the wider world.

What we hope children will achieve

Have a secure understanding of key geographical knowledge, skills, and vocabulary.

Be able to use maps, atlases, and fieldwork skills confidently.

Understand the features of different places, environments, and cultures.

Develop curiosity about the world and an awareness of environmental responsibility.

Demonstrate enquiry and problem-solving skills when exploring geographical questions.

Take pride in their learning and understand that geography helps us make sense of our world.

Ultimately, we want every child to leave us with a love of Geography, a curiosity about the world, and the confidence to explore it with an informed and imaginative perspective.
