Design and Technology at our School

Why we teach Design and Technology

At our school, Design and Technology is an essential part of preparing children for life in a rapidly changing world. It encourages creativity, problem-solving, and practical skills that help pupils understand how products are designed and made. Through D&T, children learn to take risks, become resourceful, and develop resilience—skills that are vital for future success. Our curriculum reflects the national requirements and promotes innovation, sustainability, and an appreciation of how design impacts everyday life.

How we teach Design and Technology

We deliver D&T through a carefully planned, progressive curriculum from Early Years to Year 6. Each unit builds on prior learning and combines technical knowledge with hands-on experiences. Children design, make, and evaluate products for real-life purposes, using a range of materials and tools safely. Lessons include opportunities for cross-curricular links, such as applying maths for measurement and science for understanding materials. We encourage collaboration and independent thinking, and ensure all pupils can access and enjoy the subject through differentiated activities.

What we hope children will have learned by the end of their time with us

By the time children leave our school, they will:

  • Understand the design process from concept to creation.
  • Apply technical knowledge confidently, including mechanisms, structures, and basic electronics.
  • Use tools and materials safely and effectively.
  • Evaluate and improve their own work and the work of others.
  • Appreciate the role of design and technology in society and the environment.

Ultimately, our aim is for every child to leave with the creativity, practical skills, and problem-solving abilities to thrive in an ever-changing world.
